Green Guemes - New Lecture/Talk/Workshop Series

GICCA is working with community members to roll out a new lecture series of topics to explore different aspects of where we live and how we interact with nature.  Some sessions will offer new skills, others new understanding.  The focus will be on natural history, gardening, care of the land, and more! And what’s best is that YOU might be the person leading a session, sharing what you know and love.

Volunteer Opportunities

Hello All Islanders! Did you know kindness is contagious? Research shows that being kind to others increases our own levels of happiness as well as theirs. What's more it has a cumulative effect - kindness makes our communities nicer places to be. Please ask yourself: how are YOU supporting the island, and giving yourself more happiness when you do?

We understand many of you spend LOTS of time volunteering, helping out at school, at church, within your families. But if you want to find one thing (or more!) to do to build community on Guemes, we have so many ways that you can help! It’s peak season for projects and events, so here’s a quick list to see where you might find your joy. You can find more information HERE. Or just email us at GICCAVolunteer@gmail.com to let us know what you’re interested in doing.

PICKLEBALL on GUEMES

Guemes Island Pickleball Players are a loosely organized group of local players with support from Guemes Island Community Center (GICCA) and Skagit County Parks.  The tennis court at Schoolhouse Park is open for anyone with a net. It is striped to allow for two pickleball courts at one time.

  • Players are encouraged to join in casual play Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9:00 am from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
  • To communicate availability; players may use the “TeamReach” App. Look for Guemes Pickleball and use the code8GuemesI (letter I like Island at the end). This is available year-round to build groups to play. (Reach out on TeamReach and someone will respond))
  • Anyone (residents and visitors) is welcome at the scheduled play time
  • Island visitors and Airbnb owners should plan to provide their own equipment to guests.
  • Island residents need to attend the weekend play session to learn about net handling and security, before getting the lock combination to use them at will. Locked storage for island residents has portable community nets, paddles, and a few balls.
  • Local players are encouraged to contribute $10 per year to the PICKLEBALL fund held at GICCA to buy/replace nets and gear.

Yoga/Movement/Exercise Classes Starting Soon!

Natalie Magnus is hoping to combine her passion for our Guemes community and holistic wellbeing by offering yoga, movement, and/or exercise courses beginning in late summer/early fall. She will spend the entire month of July in India in a yoga teacher training covering a wide variety of topics including: meditation, mantra chanting, hatha yoga, pranayama (breathing practices/breathwork), ashtanga yoga, yoga therapy, ayurveda medicine, alignment & adjustments, and aerial yoga.

Natalie is curious to hear from other islanders if you would be interested in community movement/yoga/workout classes, and if so what types and when. Please fill out this feedback form to provide Natalie with your input. If you have any questions, you can reach out to her directly at magnus.nata@gmail.com.

Exercise Equipment Request

Natalie Magnus will be offering yoga/movement/exercise classes starting sometime in late summer/early fall. In order to prepare for this opportunity and make it inclusive to all, she is requesting donations of any of the following exercise equipment. The goal is to create a welcoming environment so anyone can participate, without having the burden of purchasing and providing their own equipment. If you have any of this equipment and are able to donate, please contact Natalie at magnus.nata@gmail.com. Donations she would like include:

  • yoga mats
  • yoga blocks
  • hand weights (anything between 1 pound minimum through 10 pounds maximum)
  • exercise bands
  • yoga band
  • pilates/exercise ball

Thank You to Our Generous Donors!

Generosity runs deep in our community; we have come together over this past year to support each other in so many ways.  The GICCA Board of Directors thanks you for your generous support.

You GAVE BIG!

Thank you to all the donors who stepped up to GiveBig2024, a program of Washington Gives.  Your generosity raised over $750 for GICCA's ongoing support!  We couldn't keep doing what we do without your help.

GICCA Needs Stuff! Donations of Equipment Are Much Appreciated

Are you cleaning out your garage?  About to get a new barbecue? Or maybe you prefer your annual donation to be something tangible?  We are happy to receive in-kind donations!  Here's the list of what we're in need of:

  • Propane canisters that are in good shape
  • A steam cleaner (for the barbecues - it really helps!)
  • Clear Pie Plates
  • Electric Lawn Mower

We need a new refrigerator but our space is constricted - contact 4gicca@gmail.com if you want to get the dimensions we need

Thank you!!

GUEMES EMERGENCY TEAM “GET”

Guemes supports GET!  Guemes Emergency Team (GET) is benefiting from the support of individuals and organizations on the island! Individuals continue to step up to help build each of the neighborhood groups… more people are still needed. You may contact GiccaVolunteer@gmail.com to reach Greta McAlister who is the Neighborhood Coordinator for GET.  Click here for more information on this important new program.

Proceeds from the Coffee shop and Bake Sale as well as Mary Lascelles photography operating at the Community Hall during the June 8 Art Market and Studio Tour will also benefit GET!  Come purchase a cookie or pastry!

The annual Father’s Day Strawberry Social on June 16 will also benefit GET. There will be samples of shopping list purchases including cots and emergency radios if you would like to make a targeted donation.

GET ready. GET set. GET involved. GET prepared. Help make a difference.  THANK YOU.

All donations are welcome!

Guemes Connects

Neighbors Helping Neighbors – GUEMES CONNECTS Needs You

A "community" is defined as a group of people living in the same place. There is also a more internal definition. A community is a group of people that takes care of each other. As Guemes Islanders, we are geographically connected but when we feel we are part of something bigger than ourselves, we truly function as a community.

For many years, GUEMES CONNECTS has brought neighbors together to help neighbors. Their mission is to foster a network of support for the Guemes Island community. This group of dedicated volunteers is committed to meeting the needs of anyone requesting assistance, regardless of age, illness, disability, race, or religion. Now CONNECTS needs new volunteers as several of the founders are retiring.
